manuscript editing.

to enjoy stories is human.
to write stories is divine.

Wait, you wrote a book? That’s incredible, congratulations! We know all too well the hours upon hours of writing, not writing, researching, stressing, deleting, rewriting, giving up, starting again and forging on despite all the challenges that have gone into it.

So what happens now? Well, that depends largely on your goals.

Manuscript editing falls into three stages:

  • The editor will make two passes of your manuscript: the first to familiarise with the story and note initial reactions, glaring issues and the experience from a reader’s perspective; the second to problem-solve and make comments throughout the manuscript with suggestions for strengthening the story.

We will then create a chapter breakdown and compile a multi-page report containing more detailed feedback and suggestions.

You will receive the report and marked-up manuscript, and have access to the editor for follow-up questions and support.

  • Microsoft Word.

  • This depends on word count. Usually, between four to eight weeks.

  • Structural edits cost AU$0.035 per word. So 50,000 words = $1,750.

  • The editor will make one pass of your manuscript, marking it up with comments or annotations to indicate a correction is needed.

You will receive the marked-up manuscript. After perusing the marks yourself, you can then give this to your designer or formatter to make the changes.

  • Proofreading is typically done via PDF.

  • This depends on word count. Usually, one to two weeks.

  • Proofreads cost $0.018 per word. So 50,000 words = $900.

  • The editor will make two passes of your manuscript: the first to make comments and tracked changes throughout the manuscript; the second is to ensure all changes and recommendations flow and strengthen the story (and to ensure no sneaky errors have popped in uninvited or overstayed their welcome!).

You will receive two copies of your manuscript: a marked-up version, so you can see what edits have been made and can accept/reject all changes and suggestions as you see fit; and a clean version, so you can see how the finished product will look with all comments and tracked changes accepted. We won’t leave you hanging either — you will have access to the editor for follow-up questions and support.

  • Microsoft Word.

  • This depends on word count. Usually, between three to six weeks.

  • Copyedits cost $0.027 per word. So 50,000 words = $1,350.

it might have been done before, but it’s never been done by you.

To get the most out of your editorial experience, it pays to work with an editor who is familiar with and enjoys your chosen genre. This is especially important with a structural edit, when the building blocks of the story are being assembled.

genres we love:

Fiction: Literary fiction, contemporary fiction, romance, historical fiction, young and new adult, crime and thriller, etc.
Non-fiction: Narrative non-fiction, memoir, cookbooks, etc.

we are not a good fit for:

Sci-fi, fantasy, horror, children’s books, legal and scientific texts, theses, etc.

If you aren’t sure whether we work with your genre, just ask! And if we don’t, we will be happy to refer you to an editor who does.
